Declan Donnelly was praised on his upcoming baby news by Stephen Merchant as he made his solo presenting debut on Saturday Night Takeaway. The 42-year-old host hosted the show for the first time without Ant McPartlin in light of his co-host's drink driving charge and subsequent return to rehab.Despite not explicitly referencing his co-host's absence Dec joked that Stephen Merchant — who was the guest announcer for the evening — could take his place, as he was congratulated by the star on the news he is expecting his first child. As Merchant made an offer to join Dec on stage, the television personality put on a brave face when he said he was more than happy to stand centre stage on his own. 'Thanks for the offer Stephen but no,' Dec said with every confidence. 'Don't want me standing next to me because six foot seven and you're obviously considerably smaller,' Merchant joked. The writer also took the opportunity to congratulate Dec on his wife Ali Astall's pregnancy news as she prepares to welcome their first child. He said: 'Congrats on your coming baby, I for one really looking forward to it I can't pop round to your house.' Proud dad-to-be Dec confirmed he and Ali are expecting a baby in a brief statement published on social media platform Instagram last week.  Shared with a black and white image from his 2015 wedding to 40-year-old Ali, he wrote: 'Just wanted to say thank you for all the lovely messages.'The news has sneaked out a little earlier than we had hoped but Ali and I are delighted to be expecting our first child. Thanks for all the love, we really appreciate it.' Yet Dec's focus was solely on his hosting skills as he joked with his co-stars on Saturday Night Takeaway.  Merchant later made a thinly-veiled dig at the nation's favourite double act when he teased Dec by claiming he was 'filling some time' for him when he played the trailer of Sherlock Gnomes.Although Ant didn't make a live appearance in the television show, he does make an appearance in their pre-recorded comedy sketch Saturday Knight Takeaway.Merchant paid tribute to television sidekick Ant in a playful manner when he pointed out to Dec he should do 'more with that guy' because 'he was good'. Following the clip, he said: 'You should do more with that guy. He was good.'
